30th ANNUAL MEETING OF THE OWSLEY FAMILY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Other Information (Fees, Reservations, Dress, etc.) -- Registration Form (PDF file)

June 5-7, 2008
Independence, MO

Dear cousins,

This our big THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY--so mark your calendars and rustle up the relatives. Connie Howard has arranged for us to meet at the lovely Hilton Garden Inn which has conference rooms large enough for us--two restaurants, a lounge, pool, whirl- pool, computer room, plus. It's located right in Independence where we'll be spending most of our time. Come early--stay late--as there is so much to do for serious researchers and those who want a memorable vacation (see March OFHS Newsletter re attractions).

We're invited to a wine and hor d'oeuvres garden party at the home of Bill Gann and Gary Toms plus a sneak preview of their upcoming book. We'll also have a presentation on Owsleys as authors by Dr. Scott Vander Ploeg and a DNA update by Floyd Owsley and Ronny Bodine. A mystery lecture on Owsleys (that's all he's saying) will be given by the family history reference librarian par excellence, Gary Toms. And much, much more.

Thursday, 3-5 p.m. is early registration. There also is a Board Meeting from 3-5 p.m. Dinner is on your own with cousins and friends. Our traditional Thursday night dessert social will be at the hotel beginning about 7 p.m. This is a fine time to share photos, scrapbooks, genealogical finds, and tall tales (Missouri is the home of Mark Twain).

Friday morning begins with registration from 8:30-9 a.m. Then Ronny Bodine presides at our annual Business Meeting. Gary Toms will tell us about the Mid-Continent Library, the third largest genealogical collection in the U.S. plus give an overview of the other area collections. After lunch together at the hotel, we will carpool to Mid-Continent for a tour of the facility and presentations by Library staff. There is a slight possibility the Library will be closed if the move to the new building occurs the week we are there. There will be time for research or to visit area attractions. Dinner is on your own.

We'll have speakers Saturday morning, lunch on our own, and visit the new National World War I Museum in the afternoon. We conclude with our Saturday evening banquet. featuring a jovial colonial American merchant who'll tell us about life in his time.

Polo and t-shirts with the Owsley crest will be for sale. Estimated prices: t-shirts $10-12 and polos $25-30. Anticipated colors are white, black or navy, pink, blue, and yellow. To be sure your choice of color and size is available for you to purchase at the meeting, please send Doris your size (man or woman), first two color choices, and specify polo or t-shirt--as soon as possible (deadline May 12).
